A New Algorithm for Finger-Vein Image Enhancement and Segmentation

In order to achieve accurate extraction of human finger-vein (FV) network, this paper addresses the problems of FV image restoration, enhancement and segmentation. Due to strong scattering occurring in the biological tissue in imaging, FV images always are of contrast deterioration. Considering blur reduction and visibility improvement, a scattering removal scheme is firstly used for image restoration. Then, a new FV image enhancement method is proposed based on a bank of even Gabor filters. Finally, a matting-based method is used to segment FV networks by automatically estimating and scribbling the foreground and background in FV images. Experimental results show that the proposed method is capable of enhancing and segmenting FV networks in images reliably and effectively.
